There is no fixed number that suits everyone. We build a portfolio based on region, programme competitiveness, variations in the applicant's profile, budget, essay workload and the range of outcomes the applicant would genuinely accept. A list that is too short increases outcome volatility, while one that is too long can dilute the quality of research and materials; the guiding principle is that the applicant should genuinely be willing to attend every institution on the list.
We first need to consider the applicant's institution, grades in core subjects, grade trends, cohort ranking, course rigour and the requirements of the target programme. Research, employment or high-quality projects can provide additional evidence of ability, but they cannot make the transcript disappear. We assess whether to adjust the institution list, complete additional coursework, sit further examinations, explain exceptional circumstances or postpone the application.
The application must explain why the applicant is changing direction, what preparation has already been completed, how abilities from the original field will transfer, why the target programme is necessary and how it will be used after graduation. A statement of interest alone is rarely enough; relevant courses, projects, internships, research, portfolio work or professional achievements should form the evidence base.
Some programmes allow scores to be submitted later or issue offers conditional on language proficiency, while others require the standard to be met at the time of submission. We verify accepted tests, minimum overall and component scores, validity periods and final submission dates for each institution, and assess whether applying without a score may affect review rather than applying a blanket rule.
The essays centre on the applicant's genuine experience and views. CEC conducts interviews and provides support with structure, evidence selection, expression and multiple rounds of feedback; the applicant must verify the facts and be able to explain all content. The number and timing of revisions are managed under the formal service agreement, and any major change of direction close to a deadline requires reassessment.
A recommendation must arise from a genuine relationship with the referee. We can help the applicant organise facts, projects and abilities the referee has personally observed, explain the institution's format and submission process, and suggest structural improvements to a draft the referee is willing to provide. We will not impersonate a referee or submit a recommendation without authorisation.
No. Institutions make independent decisions based on the year's applicant pool, available places, materials, interviews and internal policies. What we can control is the quality of research, completeness of the materials, consistency of presentation and pace of execution. We explain the risks clearly and never present a forecast as a guarantee.
For undergraduate applications, course and activity planning should usually be completed before the application year; master's applicants should ideally begin 9 to 15 months in advance; and PhD applicants often need to start even earlier to prepare their research and identify suitable supervisors. An assessment is still possible with limited time, but mandatory requirements, referees and high-value materials must take priority, and the range of viable institutions may be restricted.
